Our Town
Formed by chance in April, 2006, four exceptional singers of a cappella harmony accepted an invitation to perform as a group just three months (and but three rehearsals) later. Much like the play, Our Town quartet embraces traditional values. They prefer classic songs by great American writers and composers; songs that lend themselves to four-part harmony singing, a unique American art form. Influenced by popular quartets of the past, including the Mills Brothers and Buffalo Bills, the group strives for audiences to leave performances humming the songs they heard the quartet sing.
The Nittany Knights
The Nittany Knights Barbershop Chorus has been entertaining audiences in the Centre County area of Pennsylvania for more than forty years. They sing four part harmony in the barbershop style as a chorus and in quartets. The Nittany Knights were first chartered in 1963 with SPEBSQSA (the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America), renamed in 2004 to The Barbershop Harmony Society. This international, non-profit organization provides an opportunity for men to gather together to practice the hobby that they love. Today there are approximately 37 members, three of whom remain actively involved since founding the chorus more than forty years ago.
The Altoona Chorus of Sweet Adelines
The Altoona Chorus of Sweet Adelines was the first chorus chartered in Pennsylvania, in 1954. They are currently under the direction of Ann George, who has been their director since 1978. The chorus rehearses weekly to perfect their craft, and performs regularly at community and private events. They produce and perform in their own show every fall. This year’s production “…And Away We Go” will be presented at the PSU Altoona Campus, Wolf-Kuhn Theater on October 18, at 7:30 pm. Special guests for the evening will be the Altoona Horseshoe Chorus, and the Altoona Area High School Advanced Jazz Band. Tickets are available at Thompson Pharmacies, Music Emporium or by calling 814-943-2237. This year there will be a combined number by both the Horseshoe Chorus and the Altoona Sweet Adelines, which is always the highlight of the show.
