Our Town, by Thornton Wilder, follows the small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, through three acts: “Daily Life,” “Love and Marriage” and “Death and Eternity.” Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, this play follows the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually—in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre—die.
In this production, Wilder’s beautiful, eloquent play also takes a strikingly unsentimental look at love and death and the fragility of connection. First love is first love, no matter where or when (in another Wilder play, Grover’s Corners is in Ohio). And death does what it does, though Wilder’s take on the spirits of the dead may surprise you. This production is “Wilder’s classic American play, as you’ve never seen it before.”
One of our other playwrights this season, Edward Albee, had this to say about Our Town: “It is probably the finest play ever written by an American."
"Beautiful and remarkable… one of the sagest, warmest and most deeply human scripts to have come out of our theatre... A spiritual experience." —The New York Post
"No American play describes more powerfully how we imagine ourselves." -The New York Daily News
"No play ever moved me so deeply." —Alexander Woolcott, The New Yorker
